The game originally released in Japan as Mashin Eiyūden Wataru in 1988 for the PC Engine and was an adaptation of the anime television series of the same name, Spirit Hero Wataru.

Published by Hudson Soft in Japan the game was originally released on February 9, 1989 for the PC Engine under the name Nectaris. The title was renamed to Military Madness when publisher NEC released a North American version of the game for the TurboGrafx-16.

Released in Japan on December 15, 1989 as PC Genjin, a play on the Japanese name of the home console, PC Engine. The game was brought to the west and released for the TurboGrafx-16 in April 1990 and was the first release in the Bonk series.
