1989 Nintendo Game Pack
Nintendo Game Pack is a set of trading cards based on several Nintendo Entertainment System games that were produced by Topps in the United States and O-Pee-Chee in Canada. The set released in 1989 and consisted of 93 cards in total, 60 scratch-off game cards and 33 stickers with top secret tips on the opposite side.
The cards were sold in individual packs for 25 cents each with each pack containing 5 cards in total, 3 scratch-off cards and 2 sticker cards. The card packs came in three different wax wrappers that either featured Mario, Princess or Link.
The scratch-off game cards had six themes based off Nintendo Entertainment System games. The six game themes were Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Punch-Out!!, Double Dragon, The Legend of Zelda and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. Each game theme featured ten different cards totaling the 60 scratch-off game cards in the set.
The cards were designed to look like television screens and the cards were numbered as such, Screen 1 of 10, etc. On the back of the scratch-off game cards featured the specific rules of each game as each theme had slightly different rules on how to play. Consumers would basically scratch the grey circular areas on the cards with the goal to uncover certain symbols while avoiding enemy symbols.
The 33 sticker cards were also based on the same six game themes. One side of the card contained either one large sticker or several small stickers featuring characters from one of the six game themes. The opposite side of the card contained “Top Secret Tips” which provided hints or game strategies for the six featured games.
In the later half of 1989 Topps’ licensee O-Pee-Chee decided to create a 2nd series in Canada which acted as an extension to the original set. The new tip cards would start their numbering sequence at 34 and new games such as Metroid would be introduced as themes. The 2nd series does not appear to have been released in the United States or by Topps and the original set does not have any reference to future sets or that it was the 1st series.
