1989 Nintendo Game Pack 2nd Series
Nintendo Game Pack 2nd series is a set of trading cards based on several Nintendo Entertainment System games that was produced by O-Pee-Chee. Released in the second half of 1989 the series was a follow up to the original Nintendo Game Pack released earlier that year. The 2nd series was released by Topps’ licensee O-Pee-Chee in Canada and was never produced by Topps or released in the United States.
The set consisted of 69 cards in total, 36 scratch-off game cards and 33 stickers with top secret tips on the opposite side. The cards were sold in individual packs for 25 cents each with each pack containing 4 cards in total, 3 scratch-off cards and 1 sticker card. The card packs came in four different wax wrappers that either featured Mario, Princess, Link or Samus.
The scratch-off game cards had four themes based off Nintendo Entertainment System games. The four game themes were Super Mario Bros. 2, Double Dragon, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link and Metroid. Each game theme featured nine different cards totaling the 36 scratch-off game cards in the set.
The cards were designed to look like television screens and the cards were numbered as such, Screen 1 of 9, etc. On the back of the scratch-off game cards featured the specific rules of each game as each theme had slightly different rules on how to play. Consumers would basically scratch the grey circular areas on the cards with the goal to uncover certain symbols while avoiding enemy symbols.
The 33 sticker cards were also based on the same four game themes. One side of the card contained either one large sticker or several small stickers featuring characters from one of the four game themes. The opposite side of the card contained “Top Secret Tips” which provided hints or game strategies for Nintendo Entertainment System games. The top secret tips in the 2nd series covered not only the four game themes that were in the set but also three games that were featured in the 1st series, The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros. and Punch-Out!!
The 2nd series was printed in a much more limited fashion and only distributed in Canada by O-Pee-Chee making the set much rarer and harder to come by than the first series.
