Major League Baseball Featuring Ken Griffey Jr.
Major League Baseball Featuring Ken Griffey Jr. is a baseball video game developed by Angel Studios and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. The game is the third installment in the Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball series, following up Ken Griffey Jr.’s Winning Run for the Super Nintendo.
Originally due to release in the third quarter of 1997 the game was pushed back and released on May 31, 1998. The game contains all 30 Major League Baseball franchises from the 1998 season. Along with the 30 official MLB teams the game also features all 30 of the teams’ stadiums. With the ability to choose any of the 30 available teams, players can select to play through an exhibition game, an entire season or a World Series playoff run.
Angel Studios implemented a fast-pace arcade-like baseball game opposed to the more realistic baseball simulation games such as Acclaim’s All-Star Baseball series. This separated the Ken Griffey Jr. baseball series from other competing baseball games and made it more appealing to kids and casual sports fans. Along with the standard game modes a four player Home Run Derby was incorporated into the game where players could select up to four individuals from any team to compete against each other.
The game was warmly received upon release selling approximately 790,000 copies during its lifecycle. Nintendo chose to continue with the series hiring Angel Studios to develop a sequel, Ken Griffey Jr.’s Slugfest for the Nintendo 64 the following year.
