Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards is an adventure video game developed and published by Sierra On-Line in 1987 for MS-DOS and Apple based computers. It is the first installment in the Leisure Suit Larry series and was inspired by Chuck Benton’s text-based adventure game Softporn Adventure. The game utilizes the Adventure Game Interpreter (AGI) engine made famous by King’s Quest: Quest for the Crown.

The game is centered around a 38-year old man named Larry Laffer who still lives in his mother’s basement and has yet to lose his virginity. Larry travels to the city of Lost Wages with the goal to find the woman of his dreams. The game begins with Larry outside of a bar in Lost Wages with only $94 available to complete his quest.

On his quest Larry encounters four women in which he tries to get involved with.   A nameless dirty looking prostitute, a woman at the club with low moral fiber named Fawn, a receptionist named Faith and a bathing beauty named Eve, Larry’s ultimate goal.

Due to the adult oriented theme of the game Sierra On-Line was unsure how it would be received by the general public.  Management decided to play it safe choosing to release it with no publicity or advertising budget so that it would not draw any unnecessary attention.

Due to the adult nature of the game the developer decided to build an age verification system into the game.  The age verification system consisted of trivia questions that Al Lowe assumed children would not know the answer to.  At the start of the game the age verification quiz would be presented to ensure the players were old enough to view the game’s explicit content.   A series of questions would be asked and if players were able to answer the questions correctly, they would be allowed into the game and if not, the game would not load.  An unadvertised backdoor was incorporated into the game to bypass the age verification system by pressing Alt-x.
